Introduction to TextPad

TextPad is a powerful, general purpose editor for plain text files. Easy to use, with all the features a power user requires.

TextPad is commercial but a free trial version can be downloaded at: http://www.textpad.com/

Manual installation of Jindent's TextPad plugin

Before starting the plugin installation please note some points:

We downloaded the Jindent Windows 9x/ME/2000/NT/XP installation bundle and installed Jindent on our harddisc at: C:\Jindent\.
We used a free trial version of TextPad 4.4.3, so if you use an older or even a newer version then several screenshots or menu items can differ from our description.
In our case Jindent was the first tool we integrated into our TextPad Editor. If you already have some other tools integrated, then of course some screenshots may look different.
Our Jindent settings file was located at: C:\Jindent\MySettings.xjs.
(Of course you can substitute this path by your own. If you already do not have a Jindent settings file then we will create one later in this instructions.)

At first start TextPad with an empty or new document.

Open the 'Configure' menu, then choose and click 'Preferences...'.

Then click on 'add' and choose menu item 'Program' to add the Jindent Console Tool to TextPad's toolbar.

Choose Jindent.exe from Jindent's installation directory and click 'Open'.

Then click on 'add' and choose menu item 'Program' again to add the Jindent Customizer to TextPad's toolbar.

Choose JindentCustomizer.exe from Jindent's installation directory and click 'Open'.

Now double click on the toolbar entry 'Jindentcustomizer' and rename it to 'Jindent Customizer'.

Finally click 'apply' to save all changes.

Now click on entry 'Jindent' left in the 'Tools' tree and change all settings on the right according the screenshot below. Then click 'apply' again.

Now click on entry 'Jindent Customizer' left in the 'Tools' tree and change all settings according the screenshot below. Finally click 'Okay' to close the 'Preferences' dialog.

Now 'Jindent' and 'Jindent Customizer' are available in the 'Tools' menu.

Before using Jindent in TextPad you have still to create a Jindent settings file stored at: C:\Jindent\MySettings.xjs. (If you already have a file there then please skip this part.)
Just click on menu 'Tools' and select 'Jindent Customizer'.

The customizer starts and an error dialog pops up telling that the settings file cannot be found. Just click 'Okay'. Now you can use the customizer to configure all formatting settings regarding your desired style.

After configuring the customizer click on its 'File' menu and select 'Save as...'. Store your settings file at: C:\Jindent\MySettings.xjs. Finally close the customizer.

Now the Jindent plugin is installed for TextPad. Just click on menu 'Tools' and select 'Jindent' to format the source file located in TextPad's active window in the front.
Now TextPad will report you 'Another application has updated file: C:\filename ! Reload it ?'. Agree to replace your old file with the new formatted one or refuse to do nothing.
